Dear Parents:
It is extremely important that you understand the potential dangers pertaining to your child’s use of the internet. This problem constantly becomes more alarming as “AI”, pornographic sites, and sick people try to take advantage of children through the internet and internet applications. We do everything possible in the school setting to be vigilant about preventing your children from being able to access dangerous and inappropriate internet applications; however, it is a necessity that you as a parent or guardian of children have a serious conversation with your child about the dangers, horrible things, and dangerous people that are on the internet trying to trap them and harm them. These people are experts at luring our precious and innocent children into harmful situations that can destroy their lives!
An article was published on KCBD on March 17th that dealt with important reminders related to online safety. A Lubbock detective, Olivia Boggs, is raising awareness about the dangers of social media and child exploitation. She highlights the grooming process, where online predators manipulate vulnerable children of all ages, by identifying their emotional weaknesses. Detective Boggs stresses that deleting posts or photos does not erase them from the internet and warns parents to stay vigilant about their children's online activity. She encourages open discussions on online safety and advises that while children should have privacy, it's essential for parents to oversee their online presence to ensure safety. If your child has a cell phone or any type of a computing device, PLEASE have the difficult conversation with them TODAY about the potential dangers and harm that can take place if they use their phone or computing device improperly, or someone else tries to take advantage of them.
